Shake Up Your Routines for a Fresh Start
Let’s get one thing straight: routines are great. They help you stay on track, reduce decision fatigue, and keep your life from devolving into chaos. But they can also get a little... stale. Ever realise you’ve had the same exact breakfast for three months? Or that your workday is just one big blur of emails, snacks, and vague discontent?
Spring is basically your cue to refresh your routines. You don’t have to throw everything out and start over. Just make a few fun, low-lift changes that shake up your energy and give your brain something new to chew on. Here are a few easy ways to do it:
Rethink your mornings
No, I’m not suggesting getting up at 5 AM (unless that’s your thing). Just try something new. If you’re used to dragging yourself out of bed and immediately doom-scrolling, try a “no-phone-until-after-breakfast” rule. Or add a mini ritual you actually look forward to (for me, that’s catching up with planner videos on YouTube whilst drinking my morning water), or jotting down three things you’re excited about that day.
Tiny tweaks can change the tone of your whole day.
Change your work scene
- Work from a cafe.
- Move your desk to face a window.
- Try a co-working session with a friend (I love doing this one! There is a kind of magic that happens when we brainstorm ideas together - plus there is someone holding me accountable for what I said I would do 😆)
Feeling extra inspired? Set up a little “focus zone” at home with just the essentials: your laptop, a notebook, and whatever else you need to stay on task. Add a plant or a mood-boosting playlist to the mix. The goal is to make working feel inviting, not like punishment.
Try a new system
- Pomodoro
- Time-blocking
- Bullet journaling
Even just switching your chair or using a different notebook can snap your brain out of autopilot. Need a structure refresh? Make it a game.
Make space for creativity
Let your brain wander without a goal. That’s where the best ideas tend to show up - not when you’re pushing, but when you’re playing.
- Let yourself daydream.
- Doodle. Paint.
- Decorate your Journal (a favourite of mine).
Or, here’s a wild idea: Give yourself permission to be bored. Seriously. Boredom breeds creativity. That space between doing things is where some of your best thoughts can sneak in (like when you’re in the shower). Take a tech-free walk, stare out a window, or go analog for a while. Your brain will thank you.
Start something new - even if it’s tiny
New routines aren’t just about swapping tasks; they’re about shifting energy. That could mean trying a new hobby, learning a skill, or finally tackling that one drawer you’ve been avoiding. Spring is a natural time for fresh starts, so why not make the most of it?
Pick something small and achievable:
- Meditating for five minutes a day.
- Reading one chapter of a book before bed.
- Journaling every Sunday.
New rhythms don’t need to be intense to be impactful.
Next Steps:
Make it Simple: Choose one part of your day that feels flat and remix it. Just for a week. Maybe it becomes a permanent change, maybe not. Either way, you’re inviting new energy in - and that’s the whole point.
Make it Fun: Add something playful into your day - Try brushing your teeth with the other hand just to see how weird it feels. Spring is your perfect excuse to shake things up, try something new, and inject a little fun back into your daily rhythm.
The Takeaway: Routines should help you feel like the best version of yourself - not trap you in a loop. You don’t need a full life overhaul. A tiny shift can reset your whole vibe. Spring is the perfect time to experiment. This season is about new growth, inside and out. Shake things up—and see what blooms. You’re not committing to anything forever - you’re experimenting.
